Over 500 women receive free breast cancer screening and education in an inspiring community health drive supported by the Rotary Club of Accra Premier and Run for a Cure Africa–Ghana

On a bright Monday morning, the courtyard of the Ga Mashie Development Authority (Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA)) came alive with the laughter and chatter of hundreds of women — mothers, daughters, and grandmothers — gathered for a cause that could save their lives.

In partnership with the Nurture Nature Foundation (NNF), and with the dedicated support of the Rotary Club of Accra Premier and Run for a Cure Africa–Ghana, Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA) hosted one of Ga Mashie’s largest breast cancer awareness and screening campaigns, touching the lives of more than 500 women.

The event, which began at 10 a.m., was more than just a health outreach — it was a movement of hope, compassion, and community empowerment.

“Our mission goes beyond awareness,” said Mr Peter Asiedu, Chief Executive Director of NNF. “We want every woman — no matter where she lives or what she earns — to have access to knowledge, screening, and support. Today, we are bringing health closer to home.”

Breaking Barriers Through Knowledge

At the heart of the programme was a deeply engaging health education session led by Mrs Rose Ohuegbe, Development Manager of Run for a Cure Africa–Ghana, whose energy and empathy captivated the audience.

Speaking with both expertise and heart, she demonstrated practical breast self-examination techniques, explaining every step in English and the Ga language. The women followed attentively — many nodding, some asking questions, others quietly holding their hands over their chests in realisation.

“When women understand their bodies, fear gives way to courage,” Mrs Ohuegbe said. “Early detection can save a life — a mother’s life, a sister’s life, a friend’s life.”

Leaders Who Serve With Compassion

The event drew strong representation from the Rotary Club of Accra Premier, including Mr Padmanabhan Menon, President, and Mr Kailash Chaurasia, President-Elect. Both lauded the collaboration as a testament to what can be achieved when civic leadership and community passion align.

“This initiative embodies Rotary’s principle of service above self,” Mr Menon shared. “What we’ve seen here is a living example of how local partnerships can create global impact.”

“Today, I witnessed compassion in action,” added Mr Chaurasia. “Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA) and NNF have set the pace for sustainable, people-centred development.”

Also present was Nana Yaa Siriboe, Regional Rotary Representative, who expressed deep admiration for the turnout and spirit of unity.

“When compassion meets commitment, communities thrive. Ga Mashie has shown us what true collaboration looks like,” — Nana Yaa Siriboe, Regional Rotary Representative.

Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA)’s Heart for the Community

As the major supporting partner, Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA) demonstrated once again its devotion to the holistic development of the Ga Mashie people. The Deputy Chief Executive, Mr Space Clottey, and Chief Priest, Numo Okassa Diaka II, were among the key figures who ensured the event’s success.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Priest Numo Okassa Diaka II spoke with passion and purpose:

“Our vision at Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA) is to bring hope to life,” he declared. “We are committed to nurturing the youth, uplifting women and children, and working hand-in-hand with partners like NNF, Rotary, and Run for a Cure Africa–Ghana to create lasting change.”

Mr Space Clottey added that Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA)’s role extends beyond governance — it is a mission to build people, restore dignity, and renew the community’s faith in its own strength.

A Day of Smiles, Screenings, and Solidarity

Throughout the day, medical professionals from Run for a Cure Africa–Ghana conducted free breast examinations and health counselling sessions, while NNF volunteers distributed educational leaflets and refreshments.

For many women, it was their first ever screening — a moment that blended relief and gratitude. By midday, the once-quiet Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA) courtyard had transformed into a space filled with hope, laughter, and a renewed sense of belonging.

“This is more than a screening,” said a mother of three, tears in her eyes. “It’s a reminder that our lives matter.”

Advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The initiative championed key UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

– SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Promoting preventive healthcare and early detection.

– SDG 5 – Gender Equality: Empowering women through education and awareness.

– SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities: Providing healthcare access to vulnerable urban communities.

– SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Strengthening multi-sector collaboration for sustainable development.

A Legacy of Hope

By the end of the day, the partnership between Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA), Nurture Nature Foundation, Rotary Club of Accra Premier, and Run for a Cure Africa–Ghana had not only screened women but also inspired an entire community. The event was proof that when institutions and people come together with one heart, real transformation happens.

“This is just the beginning,” said Mr Peter Asiedu, NNF’s Executive Director. “We will continue to build bridges between organisations, communities, and institutions like Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA) — to ensure that no woman, no matter where she lives, is left behind.”
