The Nurture Nature Foundation (NNF) has assisted with repair works on a damaged dam serving the Madavonor farming community in the Ada East District.
The intervention, undertaken on 17 September 2026, formed part of efforts to improve farmers’ access to water and support agricultural production in the community.
The dam is an important water source for farming activities at Madavonor, particularly during periods of inadequate rainfall. Damage to the facility had affected its condition and raised concerns about the ability of farmers to obtain reliable water for their crops.
The repair exercise involved the use of earthmoving equipment to work on damaged sections of the dam area. Soil was moved and reshaped as part of efforts to strengthen the affected portions and improve the facility’s capacity to serve the surrounding farms.
By assisting with the work, NNF is supporting a community-level response to one of the major challenges confronting smallholder farmers: dependable access to water. Agriculture in many rural communities remains heavily dependent on rainfall, leaving farmers vulnerable when the rains are delayed, irregular or insufficient.
Improving the dam is expected to make water more accessible for irrigation and other farming needs. It could also help farmers extend production beyond the main rainy season, protect crops during dry spells and reduce the risk of losing investments when rainfall patterns change unexpectedly.
The intervention complements NNF’s broader support for climate-smart and inclusive agriculture in the Ada East District. The foundation has also assisted farmers with irrigation materials to encourage more efficient water use and reduce total dependence on rain-fed production.
For the Madavonor farming community, the repair work represents an important step towards protecting a shared agricultural resource. A functional dam can support crop production, strengthen local livelihoods and help farming households respond more effectively to climate-related pressures.
The initiative also highlights the value of collaboration among community members, civil society organisations, public institutions and development partners in maintaining rural agricultural infrastructure.
Sustaining the gains from the intervention will require regular monitoring and maintenance of the dam, responsible use of the water source and continued support for farmers who depend on it.
NNF’s assistance is expected to contribute to greater water security for farmers at Madavonor and reinforce ongoing efforts to make agriculture in the community more productive and resilient.
